OCTOBER 14-16,2010



            “Casino on the Coast” was the theme with which Legal Secretaries of Galveston County welcomed members of Legal Secretaries International Inc. to their 2010 Annual Meeting at the South Shore Harbour Resort Hotel and Conference Center in League City, Texas.


            Early arrivals to League City were able to spend time exploring the Kemah Boardwalk and Space Center Houston and NASA’s Johnson Space Center.  Certified Legal Secretary Specialist Examinations were administered Thursday afternoon.


            Members spent time catching up during the Dutch Treat Dinner on Thursday evening at the Lobby Bar Restaurant and the Hospitality Suite was a flurry of activity as returning members and new members became acquainted.


            Seminars began Friday morning in the Amphitheater Meeting Room where the theatre-style seating provided everyone a perfect view of the speakers, as well as the marina outside.  Carla Cotropia, Esq., Partner in the firm of Mills Shirley, LLP, discussed Employment Law as it related to the prevention of discrimination and harassment lawsuits.  Richard Bloom, a motivational speaker and expert in the field of personal safety, shared invaluable information regarding ways to protect oneself.  Rick Gillis, Job Search Expert, provided insights into the practice of job seeking from the perspective of both the employer and the employee.  J. Alfred Southerland, Esq., of Ogletree Deakins, enlightened the members with a discussion regarding the impact that social networking and blogging has on employment law.


            Friday evening was a time for the attendees of the 2010 Annual Meeting to socialize at the welcome reception sponsored by Legal Directories, Inc.


            Saturday morning began with a seminar presented by Heather Cunningham of U.S. Legal Support who discussed HIPAA privacy and security rules and how they affect the retrieval, retention, and destruction of protected health information during the litigation process.


            The business meeting was called to order by President Teresa Brown, PLS.  Special thanks go out to Cheri Garcia for giving the opening inspirational; Faye LePre, for leading the Pledge of Allegiance; Judy Heinrich for reading our Mission Statement; Jennifer Comstock, for reading the Legal Secretary’s Creed; and Isabelle Grenitz-Hutchins, who served as Parliamentarian for this meeting.


            Introduction were made of Past Presidents, first time attendees, charter members and Certified Legal Secretary Specialists.  Updates were given and information was shared regarding members who were unable to be with us at this meeting and those members we have lost in the past year were remembered.


            Leave A Legacy Of Love was presented to the Kemah Police Department and the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office.  Officer Rikard accepted the gifts on behalf of the Kemah Police Department and Sergeant Dennis accepted on behalf of the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office.


            One amendment to the Bylaws was presented at this meeting; to amend Article II, Board of Directors, Section 3.2, Election and Term of Office.  The purpose of this amendment was to allow officers and directors to continue to serve in a capacity for more than four (4) consecutive terms when there are no other members nominated to fill the position.  After discussion, this amendment was accepted by the membership.


            The election of Officers and Directors held at this meeting resulted in the following individuals being elected:  Teresa Brown, PLS, was elected President; Teresa Koch, CL§,  was elected Vice President; Robbie Sargent was elected Treasurer; Lisa Roberds was elected Secretary; Carol Wilson, CL§, was elected Director of Certification; Alice Harris, KCL§, was elected Director of Marketing; Amie Krueger, KCL§, was elected Director of Education; Lee Schnabel was elected Director of Membership; and Elizabeth Harbolt, KCL§ was elected Director of Membership.


            A report was given by Isabelle Grenitz-Hutchins regarding the 2011 Annual Meeting to be held in Tampa, Florida.  Bids were opened for future meetings, and Legal Secretaries of Louisiana offered a bid for the 2012 Annual Meeting, to be held in New Orleans, Louisiana.


            The 2010 Annual Meeting concluded with the Saturday Dinner Banquet held in the Harbour Club Restaurant of the South Shore Harbour Resort.  Following dinner the members were invited to participate in a bit of gambling at the blackjack table, roulette wheel, and craps table.


            Thank you to Legal Secretaries of Galveston County for an unforgettable Annual Meeting.  We look forward to the 2011 Annual Meeting in Tampa, Florida, where we can search for “Sea Shells on the Tampa Bay Sea Shore.”
